John Roy
Vice President Cable Operations and Engineering
John Roy is Vice President Cable Operations and Engineering for Comcast Media Center (CMC). Roy, who brings over 16 years in advanced engineering experiences to the position, oversees the video encoding and distribution services that the CMC provides to Comcast’s cable systems, HITS Quantum affiliates and other content distribution customers. This includes responsibility for the CMC’s Titan Earth Station in nearby Sedalia, Colorado, its terrestrial content distribution via fiber backbone, the Encode Operations unit, IT infrastructure and the Video Engineering group.
Prior to joining the CMC’s senior management team in the fall of 2008, Roy served for two years as Senior Director of Advanced Video Implementation for Charter Communications. During this time, his team was responsible for engineering, designing and managing the deployment of advanced video technologies to over 5.8 million cable customers, including video on demand, HDTV, conditional access, and QA for the MSO's video services. From 2003 to 2006, he was Director of Advanced Video Engineering for Adelphia Communications, where his management activities included creating all of the engineering designs and deployment strategies for the MSO’s HDTV service and a centrally-managed video on demand service that was rolled out to 18 operational hubs across the country. Beforehand, Roy spent over three years as Director of MediaOne’s Broadband Maintenance Center. Roy was responsible for the design and construction of the network operation center (NOC), which monitored and provided tier II customer support for the MSO’s telephony and broadband Internet customers. He entered the industry in 1992 as a Senior Field Engineer for Scientific Atlanta (SA). During the six years he was with SA, Roy provided direct engineering support for Continental Cablevision’s (later MediaOne’s) deployment of advanced set-top boxes in 29 facilities that supported over 900,000 customers in the Western Region. Roy studied Computer Science at Palomar College and is an active member of SCTE, including serving as Vice President of the Cascade Range Chapter.
