NCTC Winter Education Conference News

CMC and Motorola Enhance HITS™ Quick Take Plus Service To Assist Cable Systems Seeking a Fast, Cost-Effective Way to Increase Revenue By Launching Digital Services

HITS QT+ Service Supports HITS Quantum HD and SD Platforms and Impulse PPV

NCTC Winter Education Conference, Charlotte, NC – Feb. 23, 2009 – Comcast Media Center and Motorola, today announced an enhanced version of the original HITS™ Quick Take Plus (“QT+”) service offered by the two companies.  The enhanced QT+ service allows HITS affiliates to launch programming from the HITS Quantum HD and SD channel platforms, as well as other content sources. In addition, Motorola announces the inclusion of impulse pay-per-view capability to the HITS QT+ headend management system.

The HITS QT+ service is a turnkey solution provided by CMC and Motorola that includes hardware, software, operating services, and programming.  HITS QT+ not only offers smaller cable systems the opportunity to increase revenues and grow their cable system, but also reduces operating costs by managing a number of functions typically handled by the local cable system. In addition to centralized headend management, HITS QT+ handles channel-mapping requirements by providing affiliates with a choice of templates for channel lineups that include programming available via HITS Quantum, while also allowing cable systems to insert channel-mapping information for locally managed channels.

These enhancements from Motorola and the CMC provide cable operators with the roadmap and the means for driving incremental revenues by expanding their lineup of digital video and broadband services,” stated Gary Traver, Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer for the Comcast Media Center. “The ability to acquire more HD and SD channels from HITS Quantum provides our HITS affiliates with an efficient and cost effective method for repurposing some of their analog bandwidth and generating incremental revenue through advanced video services as well as broadband services, such as high speed data and voice services.

"These latest innovations to the HITS QT+ platform demonstrate Motorola's ongoing commitment to providing cable systems serving smaller markets with solutions that optimize their network at a reduced infrastructure capital cost point", said Mark DePietro, Vice President, Strategy and Business Development, Broadband Home Solutions, Motorola. “Motorola joins the CMC in its strong support of smaller-market cable systems in their transition to digital and the opportunities for improved efficiencies and revenue generating, competitive new services this presents.

CMC HITS Quantum service provides centralized content distribution for more than 280 linear digital video and audio services. HITS Quantum’s HD programming service currently features 21 HDTV channels using advanced MPEG-2 compression technology, which allows cable system operators to optimize bandwidth while maintaining competitive quality of experience (QoE) for their customers. HITS Quantum’s SD service offers feeds for nearly 70 widely carried basic and expanded basic channels and allows cable system operators to reclaim bandwidth by converting analog channels to standard-definition or high-definition digital formats. HITS Quantum’s Classic service features over 194 digital video and audio services cable systems may use for expanding the scope of sports, multi-cultural and other special interest channels available to their customers. All of the channels available via HITS Quantum, as well as video on demand (VOD) programming available via HITS On Demand, may be received with one "triple-feed" antenna.

Motorola's scalable digital headend systems and portfolio of advanced set-tops provide HITS Quantum affiliates with modular, affordable equipment packages that are designed to build upon their current hardware configurations. These enhancements combine with the expansion of the HITS Quantum content offerings to provide HITS affiliates with a turnkey alternative for offering advanced video services to their customers while realizing a substantial savings in cost and bandwidth.
