National Authorizations Service (NAS) From HITS® and Motorola Upgraded To Support Advanced Interactive Video Applications

Enhancements Include Ability to Offer EBIF Applications From HITS AxIS and Support Motorola’s APEX Edge QAM

Denver, Colo – July 16, 2009 – HITS®, a leading provider of cost-effective solutions for improving the competitive position and revenue generation capabilities of cable systems serving smaller markets, and Motorola have upgraded the National Authorization Service (NAS) to support interactive video applications using the EBIF (Enhanced Binary Interchange Format) platform, including ETV services that are managed and delivered via the HITS AxIS service.

HITS AxIS, which also operates on the DAC headend management system, is currently working with more than 20 leading iTV developers and content providers and has already launched nearly a dozen ETV applications for beta testing by four cable MSOs, including dashboard, “Movie Tickets” and “Yellow Pages on TV” services customized to local markets, as well as RFI (request for information) and t-commerce applications. The NAS operating platform also supports an EBIF-compliant version of the video-rich navigation (“VRN”) service developed by the CMC and GuideWorks and offered through HITS AxIS.

The most recent set of enhancements to the NAS platform also include its ability to support Motorola’s APEX high-density edge QAM, which can help HITS affiliates to efficiently allocate bandwidth as they deploy switched digital (SDV) and modular CMTS network architectures, and expand their video-on-demand and high-speed data offerings to subscribers. The APEX platform supports standards-based video and high-speed data interfaces, while the physical chassis offers field-swappable QAM modules and redundant swappable power supplies in a cost-effective, low power package.

The NAS solution provides cable headends with the capability to receive, process, control and distribute digital video, audio, interactive and data services without requiring a local Digital Access Control (DAC) system. HITS and Motorola also operate the QT Plus platform, a centrally managed alternative to DAC and NAS headend management systems that is highly popular with cable systems serving smaller markets and MDU (multiple dwelling unit) developments.

“The greatest advantage of the innovations that we’re continuing to make to the NAS platform is that they allow system operators to generate additional revenues by deploying advanced services without having to replace widely deployed set tops or engage in costly overhauls of their existing headend architecture,” stated Gary Traver, Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer for the Comcast Media Center, which owns and operates the HITS services suite. “The HITS family of services, which are supported by NAS, integrate to optimize existing cable headend architecture, for the launch and support of advanced video and broadband services, which represents a much more economical method for increasing revenues while minimizing capital and operating expenses.”

"Motorola continues to work side by side with CMC to provide independent operators with choice both in terms of the selection of devices and the enhancement of their network capabilities ,” said Mark Depietro, VP, Video Access Solutions for Motorola’s Home and networks Mobility business. “We are excited to release this latest generation of NAS to help the independent market operator community leverage the digital expansion to manage its existing resources more effectively while delivering compelling new services."

Motorola's scalable digital headend systems and portfolio of advanced set-top boxes provide HITS Quantum affiliates with modular, affordable equipment packages that are designed to build upon their current hardware configurations. Motorola and HITS also jointly operate the HITS QT+ platform, which represents one of the fastest and most economical ways for an analog system to launch digital services, including HD. QT+ also allows affiliates to support digital set top boxes with advanced features, such as HD and DVR capabilities, as well as set tops and other devices that use the CableCard removable security module, which meets FCC requirements for separable security solutions.
